I happened to notice that a comment about the Triumph TR8 which was just on Oppo was unshared.

If it was a moderator, carry on and delete this post please.

If not, please leave the reply! It was a very informative comment on the history of the car which I would have completely missed if it wasn't shared. It's the exact kind of thing which SHOULD be shared to Oppo.

I shared it... for two reasons:

I thought it was very informative, and at least some people might be interested.

I was testing the waters of the new sharing guidelines.

I thought it fit the guidelines because it was informative and wouldn't be considered clutter, and the post it came from was a page or two old.

So, if I was wrong in sharing it, I'd like to offer my apologies and ask how I was wrong.

Basically, everyone's been arguing about the sharing of comments. Some mods say it's good, others say it's bad, and a ton of people are pissed because comments got shared or unshared. It'll all blow over in a week or so.

No no no, I completely support your sharing of it! Don't apologize! I was just saying I think that's the exact kind of thing which SHOULD be shared and was expressing my dissatisfaction with the fact that it was unshared, as I thought it met all of the guidelines and was very interesting!

There is no "Some mods say A, other mods say B." We are of the same opinion regarding sharing (it's good so long as it's done reasonably) and we all worked together to draft the "Sharing is caring" guidelines.

I'm 90% sure it wasn't a mod that unshared your post. As has been pointed out, the ability to unshare is one that all Oppo authors have. Some people seem, shall we say, over-eager to use this ability.

I thought the mods was sort of together on the issue, but then I saw this top comment saying "we discourage it greatly" and the fact that a good, valid reply was unshared.

Unfortunately I can't really say. There's no way to track how often something is unshared or who unshared it. And unless a mod happened to notice the shared post on Oppo, then noticed it had gone missing, there's no way of us knowing the unshare happened in the first place.

let me reiterate. If we do find out, from this point forward, who is unsharing legitimate shares which meet all criteria otherwise, and are doing it due to a disagreement or because they are not following the stated rules intentionally, we will treat it as a violation of the rules.

Since it appears to have been my comment that got shared and then unshared, although I'm a relative newcomer, I do feel a slight duty to wade in here. After all, I'm honoured that somebody thought that I said something informative enough to share, but at the same time, I'm a bit insulted that somebody else un-shared it for whatever reason.

Frankly, the ability for anybody to unshare a comment is incredibly stupid. I understand how excessive and inappropriate sharing of comments is undesirable, but if people can anonymously kill shared comments, it's only going to cause drama and ill-feeling, and there's enough of that going around on the internet.

Either trust us with the sharing functionality and leave it to the mods to keep it tidy (just as is done with authorship and posting), or take it away. Another option, not without its issues, but worth thinking about, would be to make sharing moderator-only – that way, mods could promote comments and posts of value, while keeping the signal-to-noise ratio high.

Just my two cents.
